Ingredients for Cookies & Cream Puppy Chow

Cookies & Cream Puppy Chow Ingredients
  • For Cookies Puppy Chow:
  • 4 whole Oreos
  • 2/3 cup (80g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 cups (80g) Rice Chex cereal
  • 6 ounces (170g) semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (or 1 cup chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • For Cream Puppy Chow:
  • 4 whole Oreos
  • 2/3 cup (80g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 cups (80g) Rice Chex cereal
  • 6 ounces (170g) white chocolate, chopped (or 1 cup white chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare Oreos: Crush all 8 Oreos into fine crumbs using a blender or food processor. Divide the crumbs equally into two large zipped-top bags or sealable containers. Add 2/3 cup of confectioners’ sugar to each bag. Set aside.
  2. Set Up Bowls: Place two large bowls on your workspace. Pour 3 cups of Rice Chex cereal into each bowl—one for the “cookies” version and one for the “cream” version.
  3. Melt Chocolate: In two separate small heat-proof bowls, melt the semi-sweet chocolate with 1 teaspoon oil in one bowl and the white chocolate with another 1 teaspoon oil in the second bowl. Use the microwave, heating in 20-second increments and stirring after each until fully melted.
  4. Coat Cereal: Pour the melted semi-sweet chocolate over one bowl of cereal and the white chocolate over the second bowl. Gently stir each to coat the cereal without breaking it.
  5. Combine and Shake: Transfer each coated cereal mixture into the prepared zipped-top bags with the Oreo crumbs and sugar. Seal the bags and shake vigorously until the cereal is evenly coated. Discard any excess powder.
  6. Store: Store the puppy chow at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Enjoy!

Double the Chocolate, Double the Fun

If you’re short on time or ingredients, you can simplify this recipe by using just one type of chocolate. Opt for semi-sweet for a rich, classic flavor or white chocolate for a sweeter, creamier twist. Simply double the amount of chocolate and oil for one batch, and mix all the Oreo crumbs and confectioners’ sugar together in a single bag. Easy peasy!

Perfect for Parties and Gifting

This Cookies & Cream Puppy Chow is a crowd-pleaser! Serve it in small bowls or mason jars for a cute party snack. For gifting, layer the two versions in a clear container for a striking visual effect, or package them separately with festive ribbons. It’s a thoughtful and delicious treat for any occasion.

Storage Tips for Maximum Freshness

Store your puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. If it gets a little sticky, give it a quick shake to redistribute the coating. Pro tip: Add a small piece of bread to the container to absorb excess moisture and keep it crunchy!

Equipment Hacks for Easy Prep

No food processor? No problem! Crush the Oreos by placing them in a zipped-top bag and using a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy glass. For melting chocolate, a double boiler works if you don’t have a microwave—just stir constantly to avoid burning. And don’t forget to use large, sturdy bags for shaking to prevent spills!

Customize Your Puppy Chow

Feel free to get creative with this recipe! Swap out Oreos for your favorite sandwich cookies, or add a sprinkle of sea salt to the semi-sweet chocolate for a sweet-and-salty twist. You can even mix in mini marshmallows or pretzel pieces for extra texture. The possibilities are endless!

Ingredients

Cookies Puppy Chow

  • 4 whole Oreos
  • 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar (80g)
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal (80g)
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (170g) (or 1 cup chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Cream Puppy Chow

  • 4 whole Oreos
  • 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar (80g)
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal (80g)
  • 6 ounces white chocolate, chopped (170g) (or 1 cup white chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Preliminary Note: You are essentially making two types of puppy chow—one “cookies” version and one “cream” version. Same ingredients for both, as listed above, but one uses semi-sweet chocolate while the other uses white chocolate. See recipe note if you only want to use 1 type of chocolate.
  • Begin by crushing all 8 of the Oreos into a fine crumb using a blender or food processor. Add half of the Oreos to one large zipped-top bag or large sealable container and half of the Oreos into a 2nd large zipped-top bag or sealable container. Add 2/3 cup of confectioners’ sugar to each. Set aside.
  • Set out two large bowls. One for the “cookies” version and one for the “cream” version. Pour three cups of Chex cereal into each bowl. Set aside.
  • Set out two small heat-proof bowls. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate and 1 teaspoon oil together in one bowl using the microwave. Melt in 20 second increments, stirring after each until melted. Repeat with white chocolate and another 1 teaspoon oil in a separate bowl.
  • Pour semi-sweet chocolate over 1 bowl of cereal and white chocolate over the second bowl of cereal. Stir gently to coat each. You do not want to break the cereal up. Pour the mixtures into the reserved zipped-top bags/containers. Seal the bags/containers and shake until all the cereal is coated with the sugar/Oreo mixtures. Discard excess powder.
  • Discard any excess confectioners’ sugar. Store at room temperature up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, if it lasts that long!
