Ingredients for Chai Spice Buttercream

Chai Spice Buttercream Ingredients
  • Chai Spice Mix:
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • Buttercream:
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (340g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 5.5 – 6 cups (660-720g) confectioners’ sugar (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 1 and 3/4 teaspoons chai spice mix (from above)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream (plus extra if needed)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt (adjust to taste)
  • Optional Garnish: Cinnamon sticks

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chai Spice Mix: In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and allspice. Mix well. You’ll have about 2 and 1/8 teaspoons total. Set aside 1 and 3/4 teaspoons for the buttercream. (Use the extra for garnish or mix it all into the frosting for a stronger spice flavor.)
  2. Beat the Butter: Using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula.
  3. Add Ingredients: Add 5 and 1/2 cups (660g) of confectioners’ sugar, the heavy cream, 1 and 3/4 teaspoons of chai spice mix, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to high speed and beat for 2 minutes until smooth and creamy.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If the frosting looks curdled or greasy, beat in up to 1/2 cup (60g) more confectioners’ sugar to smooth it out. If it’s too thick for piping or spreading, add another tablespoon (15ml) of heavy cream. Taste and add another pinch of salt if the frosting is too sweet.
  5. Use or Store: Use the buttercream immediately, or cover tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 day or in the freezer for up to 3 months. If frozen, thaw in the refrigerator and beat on medium speed for a few seconds to restore creaminess. Add a splash of heavy cream or milk if needed to thin it out.
  6. Garnish (Optional): Sprinkle with the reserved chai spice mix or decorate with cinnamon sticks before serving.

Perfect Pairings: What to Frost with Chai Spice Buttercream

This aromatic buttercream is a match made in heaven for spiced cakes, pumpkin bread, or even cinnamon rolls. Try it on a vanilla or chocolate cake for a warm, cozy twist. For a fun treat, spread it on sugar cookies or use it to fill macarons. The possibilities are endless!

Storage Secrets: Keeping Your Buttercream Fresh

Store your buttercream in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day or freeze it for up to 3 months. When ready to use, let it thaw in the fridge overnight, then give it a quick whip with your mixer. Add a splash of heavy cream or milk if it needs to loosen up. It’ll be as good as new!

Spice It Up: Recipe Variations to Try

Want to switch things up? Add a teaspoon of espresso powder for a chai latte vibe, or swap the heavy cream for coconut milk for a dairy-free option. You can also experiment with adding a pinch of nutmeg or cloves to the chai spice mix for extra depth. Get creative and make it your own!

Time-Saving Tips for Busy Bakers

If you’re short on time, prepare the chai spice mix in advance and store it in a small jar. You can also soften butter quickly by cutting it into cubes and letting it sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes. For smoother frosting, sift your confectioners’ sugar before adding it to the mix.

Equipment Essentials: Tools You’ll Need

A stand mixer or handheld mixer with a paddle attachment is key for achieving that creamy texture. Don’t forget a rubber spatula for scraping the bowl and a sifter if your confectioners’ sugar is lumpy. For piping, use a piping bag with your favorite tip for beautiful, professional-looking designs.

Instructions

  • Prepare chai spice mix: Mix all of the chai spices together. You’ll have 2 and 1/8 teaspoons. You will use 1 and 3/4 teaspoons in the buttercream and have extra for garnish. If you don’t plan to use the extra chai spice mix for garnish, just beat it all into the frosting—the extra spice flavor is wonderful!

Scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Add 5 and 1/2 cups (660g) confectioners’ sugar, the heavy cream, 1 and 3/4 teaspoons chai spice mix, the vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to high speed and beat for 2 minutes until combined and creamy. • Use immediately or cover tightly and store for up to 1 day in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer. After freezing, thaw in the refrigerator then beat the frosting on medium speed for a few seconds so it’s creamy again. Adding a splash of heavy cream or milk will help thin the thawed frosting out again if needed.
